Expanding and improving the scope of action between Spain and Portugal internally and externally, seeking new partnerships with other institutions and cooperation networks is a fundamental objective of CENCYL Green Transition. The project uses the same working method as the CENCYL Network, created in 2013.
Salamanca, Valladolid, Ciudad Rodrigo, Aveiro, Coimbra, Figueira da Foz, Guarda, Viseu and Almeida form this NETWORK with the focus on establishing a common structure for local cooperation and the interconnection of infrastructures and services in the Atlantic Corridor.
A project with three pillars: to work in an active and coordinated way to adapt to climate change; to generate projects that mitigate climate risks; and to reinforce urban resilience factors.
Valladolid's role
Valladolid's role in the project has been reinforced by its involvement in key initiatives such as Horizon Europe's 100 Smart and Climate Neutral Cities Mission, the city's Climate Change Strategy, and the CENCYL Network.
In fact, Valladolid has brought together for the first time the Spanish and Portuguese cities of the 100 Cities Mission and the municipalities that comprise the CENCYL Network to generate common strategies and action plans to drive the sustainable transformation of the 21st century.
Advocacy and awareness-raising
As the European Commission notes, the more fluid collaboration between regions favours the dissemination of knowledge and exchange of experiences and results in the creation of strategic guidelines for urban climate adaptation.
In addition, advocacy and awareness-raising are keywords in the project when developing strategies for adaptation to climate impacts.
Valladolid Encounter
Valladolid led the ‘ENCUENTRO MISIÓN ESPAÑA - PORTUGAL: HACIA LA NEUTRALIDAD CLIMÁTICA EN 2030’ ('SPAIN - PORTUGAL MISSION MEETING: TOWARDS CLIMATE NEUTRALITY IN 2030') in April 2023, in which all the cities of the CENCYL NETWORK participated together with the Mission Cities.
The event addressed the actions implemented by the CENCYL Cities programme in the field of urban environment rehabilitation, revitalisation of cities, pollution reduction, conversion of industrial areas and local development on the Spanish-Portuguese border.
Other meetings
During the year, other meetings have also been held in different Portuguese cities. In the Coimbra meeting, the cooperation and preparedness of cities in the face of climate vulnerability were the main topics. The meeting in Aveiro focused on sustainable urban development, while in the Portuguese city of Viseu, the main topic was the challenges posed by urban forests.
