Today, The Governing Board ratified the agreement of the URBANEW Project, in which Valladolid has been selected through the European Union's NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Programme. This is a joint candidacy of the seven Spanish cities that are part of the '100 Climate Neutral Cities Mission': Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz (which acts as project coordinator) and Zaragoza.

The aim is to promote the retrofitting of buildings with climate-neutral solutions, thus making the residential, commercial, public and private building sectors reduce their carbon footprint and become energy efficient. To this end, the cities will mobilise their stakeholders and jointly promote actions to encourage energy refurbishment. The aim is to encourage the use of local raw materials with a low carbon footprint and promote the deployment of renewable energies under self-consumption models and energy communities.

Valladolid’s pilot project will study mechanisms and tools for the development of urban regeneration solutions and will seek to mobilise all stakeholders (owners' associations, property managers, the construction sector, the financial sector, the energy sector, etc.) with the aim of promoting the systemic transformation of the city's buildings.

Valladolid will undertake different actions, including the development of a training programme, training workshops on energy refurbishment and financing mechanisms.

Guide of Good Practices

Over its 2-year duration, this joint initiative of the seven cities also includes the elaboration of a guide of good practices that will allow the replication of the success stories of each city in the rest of the municipalities and members of the consortium.

Project launching

As a starting point, representatives of all the cities and organisations that make up the consortium are meeting in Madrid this week. Over the course of two days, technical sessions will be held, which will contribute to the implementation of the initiative in each of the cities. There will be sessions focused on management and planning, and specific workshops coordinated by NetZeroCities. In addition, aspects related to communication, citizen participation and funding mechanisms will be addressed.
