URBAN GreenUP

Getting greener and healthier cities is one of the priorities of this H2020 project.

How? With Nature-Based Solutions (NBS, or NBS, Nature-Based Solutions) that transform urban space, not only from an environmental point of view, but also economically and socially. Valladolid, the URBAN GreenUP demonstrator city together with Izmir and Liverpool, has carried out several pioneering interventions in this area -vegetable facades and roofs, mobile gardens, green and blue corridors- to promote action for the climate and improve the quality of life citizen.

The objective of URBAN GreenUP, New Strategy for Re-Naturing Cities through Nature-Based Solutions, is to develop a methodology for urban renaturation through a series of demonstrator projects that apply nature-based solutions (NBS): "green" interventions to make cities more sustainable. New vegetation, trees and green infrastructures generate more attractive, healthy, inclusive urban spaces and, also, more resilient to climate change.

Cutting-edge urban and green transformation

The green shades in Santa María street, the renaturalisation of the market canopy in Plaza España or the green cover in El Campillo market, the mobile vertical gardens located in different squares and corners or the ‘VALLADOLID’ plant letters in Zorrilla square are some of the avant-garde interventions that transform the urban landscape and balance the city's environment. Other actions, such as the awnings that provide shade and coolness to Santa María street, complement the new trees in the neighbourhoods, as well as green barriers that improve acoustics or structures that provide habitat for pollinator species.

Training and participation actions

Apart from these technical solutions, the URBAN GreenUP project has launched other educational, public participation and citizen awareness activities on the environmental, economic and social benefits of green infrastructures. Some of these actions have reinforced the services of the network of municipal urban gardens with drip irrigation, the creation of domestic composting infrastructures and a small urban farm, with the idea of disseminating the project for school visits, workshops and environmental education activities. In May 2021, the Sponsor a Cork Tree initiative enjoyed the enthusiasm and interest of the residents of Valladolid to beautify and green the tree trees on Calle Panaderos.

Three demonstrator cities and five followers

Valladolid, together with Liverpool, in Great Britain, and Izmir, in Turkey, plays its role as a demonstrator city with the coordination of the Cartif technology center. The three cities share their experience with five follower cities: Mantua (Italy), Ludwigsburg (Germany), Medellín (Colombia), Chengdu (China) and Binh Dinh-Quy Nhon (Vietnam) in order to carry out their renaturation strategies based on the URBAN GreenUP project and its focus on the green economy.
